FPE provided sealing solution for the Robocone T-Z Module
What Was Needed:
The Robocone T-Z module is an innovative device designed to directly measure the t-z curve of soil in offshore environments. It mimics the kinematic behavior of an axially loaded pile element, particularly for jacket pile foundations used to support offshore wind turbines in deep-sea conditions. The module consists of two hollow cylinders, with the external cylinder having an outer diameter of 54 mm and the internal cylinder sliding within it. To ensure a proper seal between the two cylinders, an O-ring is required for the outer circumference of the internal cylinder.
As part of the development process, Ahmad El Hajjar, a Research Associate at the University of Bristol, sought expert assistance in selecting a suitable O-ring for this sealing application. The main challenge was ensuring that the O-ring would fit precisely in the designated groove and provide a reliable seal under the extreme conditions of underwater deployment.
The preliminary design specified an O-ring with an inner diameter (ID) of 44 mm, an outer diameter (OD) of 50 mm, and an anticipated thickness of 3 mm. The key concerns were confirming the compatibility of the O-ring dimensions with the device's groove specifications and ensuring its effectiveness in maintaining a reliable seal during the device's insertion and use under the seabed.
